NEW YORK (AP) -Cleveland Indians outfielder David Dellucci is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Monday.
Dellucci went on the disabled list March 30 with a strained left calf. He hit .240 (6-for-25) with two homers and five RBIs in eight spring games for Cleveland.
“He’ll initially begin with DHing activities and he’ll progress to outfield play by midweek,” Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said before Cleveland’s game against the New York Yankees on Saturday.
Right-hander Jake Westbrook could begin simulated game activities next month as he continues to make his way back from Tommy John surgery. Westbrook is throwing off-speed pitches from the mound and “doing quite well,” Soloff said.
While Westbrook is on track to possibly return in the middle of the season, pitching prospect Adam Miller had a setback in his attempt to alter his release point in order to avoid career-threatening reconstructive finger surgery.
He was scheduled to play catch at Cleveland’s spring facility in Goodyear, Ariz., on Saturday.
“Just playing it as cautiously as possible,” Soloff said. “Certainly a bump in the road for us and we’ll know more based on how he tolerates his throwing program over the next three to five days.”
Miller made just six starts last season before undergoing surgery on his right middle finger in May. He was also limited to 65 innings in 2007 because of a strained ligament in the finger. In 2006, he went 15-6 with a 2.75 ERA at Double-A Akron and was named the Indians’ minor league pitcher of the year.
