ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -The Tampa Bay Rays claimed first baseman Dan Johnson off waivers from Oakland on Friday.
To make room for Johnson on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated Triple-A pitcher Calvin Medlock for assignment.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said Johnson may not join the team until early next week. Johnson had one at-bat for Oakland this year before being designated for assignment on April 9.
Johnson hit .236 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs in first full major league season last year with Oakland.
Medlock made six relief appearances this season for Durham.
Tampa Bay first baseman Carlos Pena was out of the lineup Friday night against the Chicago White Sox because of tightness in his right hamstring. He left in the fourth inning of Thursday’s game at Minnesota.
Pena took batting practice Friday. Maddon said Pena might return as the designated hitter Saturday.
