ST. LOUIS (AP) -The Milwaukee Brewers promoted Mitch Stetter from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, hoping to lessen the load on lefty reliever Brian Shouse.
Shouse had been the only left-hander in the Brewers bullpen. He’s 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA and has not allowed any of 11 inherited runners to score, but pitched in eight of Milwaukee’s first 15 games.
Shouse got the win Thursday against St. Louis, retiring pinch-hitter Chris Duncan on a grounder with two runners on base to end the ninth inning. The Brewers on 5-3 in the 10th.
The 27-year-old Stetter was recalled and utilityman Hernan Iribarren was optioned to Nashville.
“Hopefully it’ll do what it’s done for the rest of our bullpen, how we’ve got our guys all balanced out for the most part,” manager Ned Yost said. “Nobody’s getting overused except for Shouse.”
The Brewers also announced that outfielder Tony Gwynn (hamstring) would begin a rehab assignment on Friday. Yost has discussed Gwynn returning without a rehab when he’s eligible to be activated on Saturday, but Gabe Kapler’s progress from a bruised shoulder eased worries about depth.
Kapler has missed three starts after being injured leaping for a ball at the wall during batting practice. He grounded out as a pinch-hitter on Thursday.
“He’s feeling better,” Yost said. “He’s getting closer to being 100 percent.”
