HOUSTON (AP) – Prized prospect George Springer says he will join the Houston Astros from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old outfielder had 37 homers and 108 RBIs with 45 stolen bases combined in Double-A and Triple-A last year. He was off to a strong start in Triple-A this season, too, hitting .308 with three homers and eight RBIs.
Springer told The Associated Press he received the news after Oklahoma City’s win over Colorado Springs on Tuesday night, when he hit a grand slam.
The Astros hadn’t announced Springer’s promotion or the corresponding move, but the Houston Chronicle reported that outfielder Robbie Grossman will be sent to Triple-A to make roster room for Springer. The newspaper also reported that pitcher Lucas Harrell, who has allowed 14 runs in three starts this season, will be designated for assignment.
