ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir threw 25 pitches over two innings in an extended spring training game Monday.
It was the first game action for the Rays’ ace since he went on the 15-day disabled list because of a left elbow strain. He felt discomfort while warming up for an intrasquad game on Feb. 26.
“He threw up to 93 (mph),” Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. “All fastballs in the first. Then in the second, he mixed them all in.”
The reigning AL strikeout champion went 13-9 with a 3.48 ERA last season. Kazmir, who could rejoin the team in early May, is to make three minor league starts, including one for Class-A Vero Beach on Friday.
Left-hander Kirk Birkins, out with a left elbow injury, threw two innings in the extended spring training game.
Matt Garza, on the DL with right arm nerve irritation, was scheduled for a bullpen session Tuesday.
