ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -The Texas Rangers called up right-hander Scott Feldman from Double-A Frisco on Sunday to make his major league starting debut against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Rangers optioned right-hander Kazuo Fukumori to Triple-A Oklahoma to open a roster spot for Feldman.
Feldman has made 73 relief appearances in three seasons for the Rangers before being converted to a starter in spring training.
The 31-year-old Fukumori was signed as a free agent during the offseason to fill a setup slot in the Rangers bullpen after 13 seasons in Japan. He didn’t allow an earned run over 10 innings in eight spring training appearances, but he had a 32.40 ERA in three regular-season games.
“I’m the worst in the bullpen so I expected it,” Fukumori said through an interpreter.
Last year Fukumori had right elbow surgery that shortened his season for Tohoku Rakuten in Japan, finishing with 17 saves and a 4-2 record as the team’s closer. Fukumori said he’s fully recovered from the injury and his elbow has nothing to do with his ineffective early performance for the Rangers.
Rangers manager Ron Washington said he expects Fukumori to work out control problems that have contributed to four walks and two wild pitches in his 1.2 innings of relief.
The Rangers plan to option Feldman back to Frisco after Sunday’s game and will make another roster move involving their pitching staff before Monday night’s meeting with the Angels.
Feldman won his only start for Frisco on April 4, taking a perfect game into the fifth inning and allowing one run and three hits in seven innings.
