MILWAUKEE (AP) -Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto’s sore right shoulder is feeling much better and he will test it by throwing before Sunday’s game.
If Soto isn’t at least ready for backup duty by Monday’s home opener, the team might have to put him on the disabled list. They’re only carrying one catcher, Koyie Hill, and he’s playing with an extremely sore toe after his foot was hit by a pitch Friday.
“After tomorrow, we’ve got to come to a decision,” manager Lou Piniella said. “We can’t continue to carry one catcher.”
Piniella said Hill’s toe injury is significant – but given the circumstances, he has to tough it out.
“We’re hurting a little bit in that position,” Piniella said. “We’re not trying to rush Geo back, or anything else. But it’s very, very difficult to carry one catcher for any extended period of time.”
