BOSTON (AP) -World Series MVP Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday by the Boston Red Sox because of a sprained left thumb.
The team purchased the contract of infielder Jed Lowrie from Pawtucket of the International League.
Lowell was injured on the first at-bat of the game Wednesday night when he fielded Ivan Rodriguez's grounder and threw him out. X-rays were negative, but he showed up at Fenway stiff and sore on Thursday and was sent for more tests.
