CHICAGO (AP) -The Minnesota Twins are trying to decide whether to call up Francisco Liriano or give him another minor league start before rejoining the team, manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday.
The left-hander missed last season while recovering from elbow surgery. He labored through four innings in a start for Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday night, throwing 88 pitches while allowing three runs on five hits and walking three.
That shaky outing aside, Gardenhire said Liriano is healthy.
“Some people say he was not great,” Gardenhire said. “We know Frankie, too. You put him in at a higher level, he throws better. He’ll throw better for us than he will for them. That’s a guarantee.”
The Twins may need a starter to fill in Sunday for Kevin Slowey, who has a strained right biceps and missed a throwing session on Wednesday. Liriano would be on schedule to pitch that day, but with heavy rain forecast for Chicago on Thursday, the Twins were waiting to make a decision. If the game gets postponed, they could move their starters back a day.
“Right now, we’re just going to be patient and not make any decisions,” Gardenhire said.
