NEW YORK (AP) -The trustee overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities is giving the New York Mets a little competition in the ticket auction business.
Lawyer Irving H. Picard asked a U.S. Bankruptcy Court for permission Tuesday to sell the company’s two Mets season tickets, which he said are in the Delta Club Gold section behind home plate. The tickets range from $225 up to $525, the price for next Monday’s opener and interleague games against the New York Yankees.
Picard said he reached an agreement with the team to transfer the tickets, which include parking, renewal opportunities and the right to buy tickets to postseason games.
“The New York Mets have been very helpful in assisting us in the process of deriving value from the Mets tickets held by BLMIS,” Picard said in a statement. “Their cooperation is appreciated and will allow us to generate the best possible return for Madoff’s victims.”
r through an online auction or a ticket broker. The remaining tickets would be sold in a group in an online auction, with a minimum bid of 50 percent of their value.
Details were to be released Wednesday on Picard’s Web site, www.madofftrustee.com.
The team is auctioning 100 tickets for the season opener with a list price of $525 (Delta Club Gold), $315 (Delta Club Silver), $280 (Ebbets Club) and $210 (Metropolitan Box). As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, the minimum bids for each section were $630, $510, $380 and $320. The team auction closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz were close to Madoff, who pleaded guilty March 12 in federal court to 11 counts, including securities fraud and perjury, stemming from a Ponzi scheme prosecutors said was worth $64.8 billion. The 70-year-old Madoff faces up to 150 years in prison at sentencing June 16.
Wilpon, Katz and many entities of their company, Sterling Equities, and various affiliated foundations are among the swindled creditors.
Previously, Mets executive vice president David Howard had said the seats were Delta Club Platinum, the ballpark’s top-priced section, which ranges from $295 to $695.
