BALTIMORE (AP) -Seattle Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard expects to quickly recover from a hip injury that forced him to miss Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup against the Baltimore Orioles.
Bedard was scratched late Saturday night after complaining about pain in his left hip. The inflammation is not serious, and he’s planning to pitch Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
“I think I’ll be fine,” Bedard said Sunday morning.
Bedard was traded to the Mariners from Baltimore in February. Although his first opportunity to pitch against his former team was ruined by his bothersome hip, he figures to get another chance later this month.
“I don’t like to miss starts,” Bedard said. Asked whether his frustration was compounded because of the opponent, he replied, “Not really. I’ll probably face them later on; we face them in two weeks.”
The Orioles travel to Seattle for a three-game series April 22-24. If Bedard pitches on Tuesday and stays on four days’ rest between starts, he will go up against the Orioles on April 23.
Mariners manager John McLaren indicated the injury occurred when Bedard was throwing in the outfield before Saturday’s game, but Bedard said, “I just woke up in the morning with it.”
Bedard threw in the bullpen before Sunday’s game and did not appear to show any discomfort.
The Orioles instead Sunday faced Felix Hernandez, who came in 3-0 at Camden Yards.
“Pick your poison,” Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said. “Both those guys are better than pretty good. But the sentiment among our guys is they want to compete against the best. They were looking forward to that sense of competition against Erik, as I’m sure he was. He’s a competitor. But we’ll get him sometime down the road.”
