CINCINNATI (AP) -An apparent leg injury forced Javier Valentin out of a game in the sixth inning Friday night, leaving the Cincinnati Reds short-handed at catcher.
The Reds already were missing David Ross, who is on the 15-day disabled list. Ross missed most of spring training because of back spasms.
Valentin barely jogged out of the batter’s box after hitting a sixth-inning single off Philadelphia’s Ryan Madson. He slowed to a walk and grabbed the back of his left leg when he reached first base, then left the game for treatment.
Paul Bako, the only healthy catcher left on the roster, came in as a pinch-runner.
