MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The Minnesota Twins have optioned infielder Matt Tolbert to Triple-A Rochester to finalize the roster that will open the season.
Tolbert hit .294 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in spring training.
The Twins still have 26 players on the roster, but have already announced plans to reassign catcher Jeff Christy to minor league camp following Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh to get down to the 25-man limit.
Tolbert was hoping to make the team out of spring training, just like he did a year ago. But the signing of third baseman Joe Crede deepened the team’s bench. With Brendan Harris and Brian Buscher both now reserves, there was no room for Tolbert this time around.
