NEW YORK (AP) -Jorge Posada was pulled from the New York Yankees’ lineup Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays because of a stiff right shoulder.
The All-Star catcher thought he tweaked his shoulder on a throw to second base Tuesday night during New York’s season opener, manager Joe Girardi said. Posada was in the original starting lineup Wednesday, but was removed about 90 minutes before the first pitch.
“Nothing that I’m concerned about,” Girardi said. “I don’t expect it to be long.”
The gametime temperature was 44 degrees on a windy night at Yankee Stadium.
“His shoulder’s a little stiff. So we just thought, you know what – the weather, the breeze – let’s play it safe. It’s too early in the year,” Girardi said. “He’s day to day.”
Jose Molina started behind the plate for the Yankees and batted eighth. Designated hitter Hideki Matsui moved up from eighth to the No. 7 spot.
The 36-year-old Posada, a five-time All-Star, has never been on the disabled list during his major league career, which began with brief call-ups in 1995 and ’96.
He is coming off perhaps his best season last year, when he batted a career-high .338 with 20 homers, 90 RBIs, 42 doubles and a .426 on-base percentage.
Posada filed for free agency in the offseason, then returned to the Yankees with a $52.4 million, four-year contract.
