ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -Pitcher Darren O’Day, a non-roster player, became a member of the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night while infielders Brandon Wood and Kendry Morales were sent to the minor leagues.
O’Day, a 25-year-old right-hander, went 3-0 with a 2.04 earned-run average as a reliever. In 17 2-3 innings, O’Day allowed 12 hits and five walks while striking out 14 batters.
“Outside of his last couple of outings, he was throwing strikes at will,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He was starting to move up our depth chart with the way he pitched last year but he grew by leaps and bounds.
“He hasn’t been pitching that long in pro ball but he’s just got great poise out there.”
Wood and Morales were among nine Angels sent to the minor leagues. The others were pitchers Nick Adenhart and Alex Serrano, outfielders Dee Brown and Terry Evans, catchers Ryan Budde and Bobby Wilson and infielder Hainley Statia.
All but Statia were sent to Triple-A Salt Lake City. Statia, a native of the Netherlands Antilles, was sent to Double-A Arkansas.
Four pitchers – Chris Bootcheck, Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey and Scot Shields – were placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21.
