FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -Catcher Josh Bard was placed on waivers by the Boston Red Sox.
General manager Theo Epstein says the move was made as a testament to the performance of the team’s other young catchers, especially George Kottaras, who spent last season at Triple-A Pawtucket and was a September callup.
Kottaras would move into the backup role behind Jason Varitek. His, primary responsibility will be to catch knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.
Bard had signed one-year, non-guaranteed contract for $1.7 million on January 2. Wednesday was the last day for a ballclub to place a player on unconditional waivers and pay 30 days termination pay instead of 45 days.
In six spring training games Bard hit .429 (6-for-14) with one home run and five RBIs.
