FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been diagnosed with an abdominal strain and will likely be out only a matter of days, not weeks as originally feared.
The reigning American League MVP left the World Baseball Classic on Saturday for Fort Myers and was examined that night by Dr. Thomas Gill, the Red Sox team medical director.
What was initially believed to be an injury to his left oblique was diagnosed as a strained left abdominal.
General manager Theo Epstein said on Sunday that the team is unlikely to make a move for a middle infielder since Pedroia is expected to be out long.
