PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -The New York Mets have shut down right-hander Tim Redding because of a lack of strength in his throwing shoulder.
General manager Omar Minaya announced the move on Saturday, saying the team would rest Redding until his arm strength comes back.
Redding was signed by the Mets in January after having offseason foot surgery.
He made his first game appearance last Sunday against the University of Michigan, giving up five hits and five runs in one-third of an inning.
The former Nationals pitcher struggled again on Thursday in his Grapefruit League debut, giving up eight hits, including three home runs, and nine runs in two innings.
Afterward he said his shoulder wasn’t bothering him, and he was surprised his location was so far off after having good bullpen sessions.
