JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Joel Pineiro will be sidelined a few more days because of shoulder discomfort, although an MRI exam revealed no serious problems.
Pineiro, 6-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 11 starts after being acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Red Sox, characterized the injury as an inflammation. But pitching coach Dave Duncan doesn’t know if Pineiro will be ready for opening day.
“In my opinion, he’s not there,” Duncan said Tuesday. “I’m assuming he will not be there until he starts throwing again and shows me he can be ready.”
Anthony Reyes will take Pineiro’s scheduled start on Wednesday and Pineiro is to resume throwing Friday.
