VIERA, Fla. (AP) -Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden says he is resigning.
Bowden is discussing his decision to step down at spring training on Sunday.
He has been the only GM the Nationals have had since the franchise moved from Montreal to Washington before the 2005 season.
No replacement is being announced immediately.
Bowden’s resignation comes a week after it was initially reported that he is part of a federal investigation into the skimming of signing bonuses given to prospects from Latin America. He met last year with FBI investigators.
Says Bowden: “I’ve become a distraction.”
His announcement comes two days after Jose Rijo, a special assistant to Bowden, was fired by the Nationals.
