JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -Spring training games just started and already two Florida Marlins are out with injuries.
Pitcher Sergio Mitre was diagnosed Friday with a forearm muscle strain, and outfield prospect Cameron Maybin limped off the field with a tight left hamstring.
Mitre, who arrived at camp as the only right-hander assured of a spot in the rotation, left his opening game Thursday after facing three batters. He was examined Friday by Dr. Frank Cook, the team’s orthopedic surgeon.
Cook and the Marlins “think it’s a muscle strain in the forearm,” Mitre said. He said ligament damage was ruled out – for now.
“I guess that’s good, but you never know,” Mitre said.
Mitre said he’ll try to resume throwing next week and if the discomfort persists, an MRI will be performed.
Maybin pulled up while running to second base after reaching on an error in the ninth inning of Florida’s 4-1 win over the Nationals in Viera.
“We don’t know if it’s a pull or a cramp, so we just took him out of the game,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “It didn’t pop, so that’s a good sign.”
Maybin was acquired in the December trade that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to the Detroit Tigers, and the injury could hurt his chances of winning a starting job in center field on opening day. He is 2-for-9 this spring.
The news on the health front wasn’t all bad for the Marlins. Right-hander Josh Johnson threw off a mound Friday for the second time in five days.
Johnson underwent surgery on his right elbow last August. He hopes to rejoin the rotation in July, although he’s braced for a setback in his recovery.
“I’m trying to tell myself, don’t get too high, don’t get too low,” he said. “They tell you that setbacks are going to happen. If I don’t, then I’m one of the luckiest people to have the surgery.”
Johnson threw 30 fastballs at about 50 percent of his normal velocity. He threw 19 pitches in his first mound session Monday. He’ll go back on the mound Tuesday, gradually increasing his pitch count and velocity.
Mitre pitched well early last season, then faded after the All-Star break and finished 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts. He logged a career-high 149 innings.
He said he felt the elbow stiffen up in the first inning Thursday.
“I felt it stiffen up real bad,” he said. “I tried to throw a couple more, and I just couldn’t. It wasn’t happening. It wasn’t working.”
