PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -Moving objects seem to have a way of finding San Diego Padres players and bosses when they least expect them.
Manager Bud Black made it onto the unofficial injury report on Saturday, a day after getting hit on the right wrist when catcher Eliezer Alfonzo let go of his bat in a spring training game.
“I got smoked,” said Black, whose wrist was swollen. “A little sore today. No further tests necessary.”
Black crossed his arms in front of his face to protect himself during the eighth inning of Friday’s game against the Cleveland Indians at Goodyear.
He was in good spirits in giving the play-by-play of the injury.
“Fairly short range between home plate and the third-base dugout, so I’m just leaning on the rail, as players and coaches do,” Black said. “2-0 swing, good finish, came through, let go of the bat, the old whirlybird toward the dugout, right at me, zeroing in. Go into the protective mode, ow, start to turn, contact, bat down, glasses off.”
on his left shoulder due to wear and tear, said he reassured everyone in the dugout that he was OK, then put on a brave face despite the pain.
During spring training 2007, Padres general manager Kevin Towers was hit in the face by a foul ball that ripped through the screen behind home plate. Towers, sitting in the fourth row, chipped a tooth and also had a swollen and cut lip.
Last season, two Padres players sustained painful injuries when they were hit in the face.
Right-hander Chris Young missed more than two months after being hit in the face by Albert Pujols’ line drive on May 21, breaking his nose and fracturing his skull.
Catcher Michael Barrett fouled a ball off his face during a game at Colorado on July 2, fracturing three bones and landing on the disabled list for the rest of the season.
uld have been the starter for the semifinals in his home stadium, Petco Park, but the United States, loaded with All-Stars, was eliminated in the second round. “Hey, I think we’ve got a good bunch of guys,” Peavy said. “I think we have a scrappy younger bunch of guys that play hard. Hopefully we can put it together and play the way we know that we’re capable of playing. I think we’ve got the means of being the best team in this tournament. We’ll see how it shakes out.” … The United States plays its first game March 7 against Canada in Toronto.
