SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -Texas right-hander Brandon McCarthy will not start the Rangers' spring training opener because of soreness in his right elbow.
Rangers manager Ron Washington said Tuesday the injury was minor and McCarthy was being held back as a precaution. The Rangers open their spring schedule Wednesday against Kansas City.
McCarthy missed a month last year with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade and finished 5-10 with a 4.87 ERA in 23 appearances, 22 of them starts.
