PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – The new-look San Diego Padres are together on the field for the first time. And their front office is thrilled with their whirlwind offseason.
The Padres held their first full-squad workout Wednesday as chairman Ron Fowler gushed over the work of new general manager A.J. Preller. The Padres brought in a new ace in James Shields, three new outfielders led by Matt Kemp and Justin Upton, and made other moves designed to end an eight-year playoff drought.
Fowler says ”it was time” to shake up the baseball operations and roster when it became clear a year ago that things weren’t working. Fowler says Preller ”spent our money wisely.”
