GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -The son of the baseball player whom New York Yankees great Lou Gehrig famously replaced at first base has died.
Walter Pipp of Grand Rapids died Wednesday at 74, the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home said. Thomas Pipp of Sarasota, Fla., said Monday his brother died of complications arising from Parkinson’s disease.
Their father, Wally Pipp, died at 71 in 1965 in Grand Rapids.
Gehrig replaced Pipp in a game on June 1, 1925, because Pipp had a headache. Pipp never got his job back, and Gehrig went on to play in 2,130 consecutive games.
Walter Pipp also is survived by a sister, Dorothy Gibler.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
