PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez has informed the club he will not be reporting to spring training and will not play in 2014.
Gutierrez let the team know that he is dealing with a relapse of the gastrointestinal problem he dealt with last season, and he didn't think it was fair to come to spring training if he could not fully compete for a spot on the major-league team.
Gutierrez has been placed on the restricted list and removed from the 40-man roster. The 30-year-old outfielder from Venezuela played in only 41 games for the Mariners last season and went on the disabled list twice with a strained right hamstring. He had six stints on the DL over three seasons with Seattle after winning a Gold Glove in 2010.
