 GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Third baseman Scott Rolen has declined the Cincinnati Reds' offer to attend spring training to compete for a reserve role.
The 37-year-old infielder informed the team on Tuesday that he's keeping his options open, but isn't ready to try to play right now.
The seven-time All-Star has been limited each of the last three seasons by a chronic shoulder problem and back spasms. He batted .245 in 92 games last season with eight homers and 39 RBIs.
General manager Walt Jocketty traded for Rolen in 2009, bringing in a veteran leader for a young team. The Reds won the NL Central two of the last three years. Rolen's contract was up, but the Reds offered a reserve role this season, with Todd Frazier taking over at third base.
