ST. LOUIS (AP) -The St. Louis Cardinals have released Adam Kennedy, leaving the second base job up for grabs with just a week to go before spring training.
The Cardinals made the surprise announcement on Monday. The team requested waivers on Kennedy that will expire on Wednesday, when he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
Several players from within the organization will compete for the starting job at second base, including Skip Schumaker, who has spent his career as an outfielder.
Kennedy requested a trade in August after the Cardinals signed infielder Felipe Lopez, who played 23 games at second for St. Louis. The team found no takers.
The Cardinals didn’t re-sign Lopez, and infielder Aaron Miles, signed a two-year contract with the Cubs in December.
