NEW YORK (AP) -The Mets and pitcher Elmer Dessens were close to completing a minor league contract Thursday.
Dessens was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates in spring training last year, then caught on with Atlanta late in the season. He went 0-1 in four relief appearances with the Braves, allowing 10 earned runs and 10 hits in four innings for a 22.50 ERA.
The 38-year-old right-hander is 48-62 with a 4.56 ERA in 12 major league seasons. His best year came with Cincinnati in 2002 when he was 7-8 with a 3.03 ERA in 30 starts.
If added to New York’s 40-man roster, Dessens would get $600,000 in the majors and $72,000 in the minors. He could earn an additional $30,000 each for 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 relief appearances.
