BOSTON (AP) -Boston Red Sox backup first baseman and outfielder Mark Kotsay has had back surgery to remove a displaced disc fragment.
Red Sox spokeswoman Pam Ganley said Wednesday that Kotsay isn’t expected to miss much of the season. The surgery was performed on Jan. 29 after Kotsay complained of back pain.
The Red Sox signed Kotsay on Jan. 15 to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
The 33-year-old Kotsay batted .276 last season, including .226 with 12 RBIs in 22 games for the Red Sox after he was acquired from Atlanta on Aug. 27.
