Trade Off
Boston, MA – A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will have surgery to repair a ligament in his right thumb.
Lowell plans to have the operation after Christmas and his recovery is expected to take six to eight weeks, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday night because the team had not made an announcement.
The news squashes a near trade – at least for now – between Boston and Texas that had been pending based on Lowell’s health. The deal would have sent Lowell to the Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez.
The 2007 World Series MVP, Lowell batted .290 with 17 homers and 75 RBIs last season while hobbled by hip and thumb injuries.
