Giants revamp rotation, are 8/1 to win WS
The San Francisco Giants have completely revamped their starting rotation in the matter of a few weeks and are now among the favorites to win next year’s World Series.
Earlier this month the Giants signed free agent starter Jeff Samardzija to a five-year, $90 million contract. Samardzija is coming off a horrible season while posting a 4.09 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP with the White Sox last season.
But the 30-year-old noted at his introductory press conference with the Giants that he believes he was tipping his pitches last season. He also played in a bad pitcher’s park in Chicago and for a team that had horrible defensive numbers. Those two things won’t be an issue for Samardzija in San Francisco, which plays in a big ballpark and employs the likes of Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Joe Panik defensively.
But the Giants didn’t just stop at Samardzija. The club also signed Johnny Cueto to a six-year, $130 million contract. Like Samardzija, the Giants are hoping that Cueto can overcome some of the struggles that he had last season and emerge as the Cy Young contender that he was in 2014.
Given a rotation that now boasts Samardzija, Cueto and ace Madison Bumgarner, the Giants have 8/1 odds to win the 2016 World Series according to oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag. Since 2010, the Giants have won the World Series in every even year: 2010, 2012, and 2014. Perhaps 2016 will once again be San Francisco’s year.
