Lance Lynn (10-6, 3.15 ERA) draws the start for the Cardinals, while Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3, 3.80) gets the nod for the Red Sox. Lynn has only allowed nine earned runs in his last eight starts, going 4-1 during that stretch while St. Louis is 6-2. Rodriguez is coming off one of his best starts of the season as he shut out the Yankees over six innings, giving up two hits and walking two while striking out seven in a 5-4 loss. He has only given up two earned runs in his last 12 innings, righting the ship after a pair of underwhelming starts where he allowed eight total earned runs over 9 1/3 innings.
Boston won the opener of this two-game set at Fenway Park by a 10-4 final Tuesday night. The Red Sox are 68-51 overall and 37-21 at home, while the Caridnals come into play 61-58 and 26-31 on the road.
The Red Sox used a triple-play and an eight-run fifth-inning to stomp the Cardinals on Tuesday. Xander Bogaerts paced Boston offensively by going 3-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Sandy Leon also doubled and drove in two plus scored a run. Rick Porcello picked up the win on the mound, giving up three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
Lynn is a very consistent pitcher who you can trust even in a difficult setting such as this. The Cardinals are in the midst of a pennant race as they trail the Cubs in the NL Central by only 1.5 games, while Boston has built a bit of a cushion in the AL East. Take the better pitcher.
