Jays shock Rays
Toronto picked up a 2-0 win over the Rays in the series opener on Monday night. They are 6-2 in their current road trip. The Blue Jays are 46-69 overall, 26-35 on the road and 56-55 with the under. Toronto has Trent Thornton getting the start today. He is 4-7 on the year with a 5.23 ERA.
Jacob Waguespack improved to 3-1 on the season by throwing six scoreless innings on Monday, striking out four while allowing just four hits. The Toronto bullpen then threw three scoreless innings with Derek Law getting his second save of the year. Bo Bichette led the Jays at the plate with a solo home run, two hits and two runs scored. Cavan Biggio drove in the other run.
Rays end win streak
Tampa was on a six-game win streak and hot at the plate coming into Monday, but the bats went silent in the loss to Toronto. Tampa is now 65-49 overall, 30-27 at home and 55-50 with the under. The Rays have Andrew Kittredge on the mound today. He is 1-0 on the season with a 2.52 ERA.
After a scoring surge that lasted a week, Tampa was held to just five hits on Monday, all of which were singles. Not a single player had multiple hits. On the mound, Charlie Morton pitched well, but took the loss. He threw seven innings and allowed the two runs, but struck out nine and walked none. Morton is now 12-4 on the year.
MLB Betting Trends
Toronto
The Blue Jays have won seven straight Game 2’s of a series and seven of their last nine road games against a right-handed starter.
Tampa Bay
The Rays are 6-1 in their last seven games against a right-handed starter, but just 2-6 in their last 8 Tuesday games.
Prediction:
The Rays were shocked last night and now return to their form of starting a reliever. It has worked out just fine for them most of the season and Kittredge typically does well on the mound. Thornton has had an inflated ERA all season and has been pretty inconsistent with the lengths of his starts. Over two starts against the Rays, Thornton has a 9.39 ERA. Given Tampa struggled at the plate last night, I expect them to bounce back tonight. Their pitching staff will be strong no matter who is on the mound.
MLB Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays -200
