Brewers shoot to spoil ‘Zona prospect’s debut
Arizona fans haven’t had a ton about which to get excited this season. Perhaps Braden Shipley can inject a little optimism in a few short hours.
The Diamondbacks’ No. 1 prospect is set to take the hill in the team’s series opener vs. Milwaukee, with a 7:20 p.m. ET first pitch in the Badger State. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI prefer the host squad. Chip Hale’s crew, on the other hand, enters as a +111 underdog. The over/under run total sits at 9.5.

Shipley posted solid, albeit unspectacular, numbers at the Class AAA level. In 19 assignments for Reno, the 15th overall selection in the 2013 MLB draft went 8-5 with a 3.70 ERA. Scouts and talent evaluators adore his command, though, which clearly manifested itself in the minors. Shipley struck out 77 while walking just 22 in 119 1/3 innings of work.
Still, the D-backs find themselves mired in a 4-17 rut. Yesterday’s 9-8 triumph over the Reds in Cincinnati served as a rare highlight in a campaign rife with frustration. Yasmani Tomas smashed two homers in that affair, and he’ll aim to stay hot against Chase Anderson shortly. The Brew Crew righty holds a 0-4 record with a 9.13 ERA since June 13.

Trying to establish a real feel for the contest in question presents some difficulties. How will Shipley’s stuff translate to the bigs? Does Anderson finally rectify a month-plus stretch of dreadfulness? In any event, we like the bats on both sides to rise up sooner rather than later.
