Padres unable to close out Cubs
San Diego had a game effort on Friday, but still suffered a 6-5 loss to the Cubs to continue their recent slide. San Diego is 46-51 overall, 23-24 on the road and 46-43 with the over. The Padres Joey Lucchesi taking the mound this afternoon. He is 7-4 on the season with a 3.92 ERA.
A competitive game saw the Padres fail to get the game-tying run on Friday. They out-hit the Cubs, 13-7 in the loss, as they stranded 11 runners. Manny Machado hit his 24th home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs while Josh Naylor also homered. Eric Lauer didn’t have a great start, giving up five runs over 4.2 innings. However, he didn’t take the decision. Craig Stammen took the loss by giving up the game-winning run for Chicago in the eighth.
Cubs win another
Chicago has won six of its last seven games thanks to the series-opening win on Friday afternoon. The Cubs are 53-44 on the season, 35-17 at home and 48-47 with the over. Jose Quintana gets the start this afternoon for the Cubs. He is 7-7 on the season with a 4.21 ERA.
The winning run wasn’t terribly exciting as Addison Russell scored on a San Diego error in the bottom of the eight. Anthony Rizzo had the big day at the plate, knocking out a pair of hits with four RBI. He hit his 20th home run of the year in the process. Javier Baez added his 23rd home run of the year as well. Jon Lester took a no-decision, giving up four runs in six innings. Pedro Strop got the win in relief, allowing one run in one inning of relief while Craig Kimbrel earned his fifth save of 2019.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are just 8-20 in their last 28 Saturday games and 15-40 in their last 55 road games against a left-handed starter.
Chicago
The Cubs have won six of their last seven at home and 52 of their last 70 home games against a losing team.
Prediction:
The Padres just don’t have a lot of momentum right now. Joey Lucchesi hasn’t been bad on the mound this year, but I don’t trust his team to help him in key spots. He also has struggled in road starts, posting a 5.79 ERA over seven outings. Quintana has been pretty steady outside of a really bad outing against the Mets. I don’t know that he will need his best stuff today. The Cubs should be able to get some good swings on Lucchesi today. I like Chicago to keep the momentum going this afternoon.
MLB Prediction: Chicago Cubs -125
