O’s attempt to wrest control from Yankees
Experts across Major League Baseball keep speculating as to how active the Yankees will be approaching the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline. The Bronx Bombers themselves just want to keep the wins coming.
Joe Girardi’s club tries for its second straight triumph over Baltimore tonight, with a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch in New York. Oddsmakers at online sports book Bovada.lv are starting to believe in the Yanks, too, listing them as 1.5-run favorites here. The Orioles, on the other hand, represent +143 underdogs.

New York handed the O’s a 7-1 defeat yesterday, continue a nice run since the beginning of the month. Winners of seven of 11, the Yankees suddenly stand above .500 and within striking distance of the American League’s second wild card. Much of the turnaround is owed to outstanding work courtesy of Masahiro Tanaka, Ivan Nova and Nathan Eovaldi.
This evening’s hurler, however, still goes through periods of ineffectiveness. Michael Pineda surrendered three homers in his most recent assignment alone, and that WHIP of 1.37 just won’t do the trick in the AL East. The righty’s last victory came on June 7.
Baltimore’s Yovani Gallardo can’t quite find his rhythm either. Since returning from the disabled list several weeks ago, the veteran carries a 6.04 ERA. Yet, Buck Showalter’s bunch tends to support the former Milwaukee standout. The Orioles have prevailed in seven of Gallardo’s 10 nods in 2016.

That cute narrative ends here. The Yanks are positively roaring at the moment, with a not-so-grizzled veteran spearheading the charge. Carlos Beltran, as jubilant as ever at 39, boasts a .301 batting average, 19 dingers and 58 RBIs. He’ll surely add to those figures in a few hours.
