Matheny canned after loss
St. Louis’ brass fired Matheny as the Cardinals dropped to 47-46 after last night’s 8-2 home loss to Cincinnati. Mike Shildt will serve as the interim manager. St. Louis was paced by Matt Carpenter in the defeat as he went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Dexter Fowler finished 2-for-4. Jordan Hicks took the loss in relief as he gave up four earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk in one-third of an inning.
Peraza has five-hit game
Reds shortstop Jose Peraza finished 5-for-6 with a run and two RBIs in Saturday’s win. Joey Votto went 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, a run and two RBIs. Scooter Gennett finished 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. David Hernandez earned the win as he gave up a hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
Anthony DeSclafani 4-1, 4.43 ERA) will start today for the Reds, while the Cardinals counter with Miles Mikolas (10-3, 2.65).
MLB Betting Trends
Cincinnati
The over is 18-6-2 in the last 24 Reds games overall. Cincinnati is 5-17 in the last 22 meetings.
St. Louis
The over is 7-1 in the last eight Cardinals games following a loss. St. Louis is 8-4 in Mikolas’ last 13 starts.
Prediction:
St. Louis is in desperation mode as the firing of a manager shows. It’s surprising the Cardinals didn’t wait until the All-Star Break to fire Matheny, meaning one more game. I’d like to fade the Cardinals today, but the fact is Mikolas has been their most consistent pitcher and the firing could be a wakeup call. Bet on favored St. Louis in this spot.
