Pirates beat up by Cubs
Pittsburgh dropped the first two games in this series, 4-3 on Friday and 10-4 on Saturday. The Pirates are 44-47 on the season, 22-26 on the road and 54-34 with the over. Pittsburgh has Trevor Williams getting the start today. He is 3-2 on the season with a 4.54 ERA.
The Pirates had 11 hits in Saturday’s loss, but finished with just four runs. Pittsburgh was down big early, with the Cubs putting up seven runs in the first. Jordan Lyles gave up the seven runs and recorded just two outs in his start to fall to 5-6 on the year. At the plate, Starling Marte had two solo home runs to lead Pittsburgh while Jung Ho Kung had a solo home run as well.
Cubs heating up
The Chicago Cubs have won four of their last five games following the 10-4 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Three of those wins have been against the Pirates. The Cubs are 49-43 on the season, 31-16 at home and 46-44 with the over. Chicago has Jose Quintana getting the start today. He is 6-7 on the year with a 4.19 ERA.
Chicago’s bats came alive on Saturday, as they jumped out for seven runs in the first and then had 10 by the end of the fourth. Wilson Contreras hit his 19th home run of the year and drove in three while Jon Lester helped his own cause with a home run, two hits and three RBI. Lester threw 6.2 innings and allowed three runs while striking out six to earn his ninth win of the year.
MLB Betting Trends
Pittsburgh
The Pirates have lost four straight road games and 11 of their last 16 games against a left-handed starter.
Chicago
The Cubs have lost four of Quintana’s last five home starts and four straight Game 3’s of a series.
Prediction:
Chicago could be hitting a hot streak here, but today will be a big test. Quintana has had some shaky starts in recent weeks, but he also hasn’t gotten much in run support. If Chicago can hit like it did on Saturday, it’s a sign that the Cubs could be a real playoff threat. Trevor Williams has allowed 16 runs over his last 17.1 innings, including five over 5.2 innings to the Cubs on July 1, his last start. I like Chicago to keep this momentum going and finish off the weekend sweep.
MLB Prediction: Chicago Cubs -165
