Jays shutout in opener
Toronto continued its recent struggles when it opened the second half of the season with a 4-0 loss at New York on Friday night. Toronto is 34-58 on the season, 16-28 on the road and 45-44 with the over. The Jays have Clayton Richard getting the start this afternoon. He is 1-5 on the year with a 6.23 ERA.
The Jays couldn’t get much going at the plate on Friday, as they scattered six singles in the short porch of Yankee Stadium. Eric Sogard was the lone Toronto player to put up multiple hits. Aaron Sanchez took the loss on the mound to fall to 3-13 on the year. He gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings and recorded just two strikeouts.
Yankees start strong
The Yankees were able to shake off a brief 2-game losing streak on Friday with the 4-0 win at home over Toronto. New York is now 58-31 on the season, 32-14 at home and 48-38 with the over. New York has J.A. Happ getting the start today. He is 7-4 on the year with a 5.02 ERA.
Domingo German earned his 11th win of the season on Friday by pitching six scoreless innings. German allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out seven. At the plate, New York had 10 hits. Brett Gardner had a double and a triple in the win while Edwin Encarnacion had two hits, including a three-run double.
MLB Betting Trends
Toronto
The Blue Jays are 2-8 in their last 10 Saturday games and 9-25 in their last 34 games against a winning team.
New York
The Yankees have won six straight Game 2’s of a series and seven of their last eight games against a left-handed starter.
Prediction:
Happ has been a little hot-and-cold this year and is coming off a better starter, allowing just one run to the Rays. However, he hasn’t been getting deep into games. That probably won’t be an issue today against a weak Toronto lineup and a solid bullpen behind him. Richard has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last six starts and isn’t getting a lot of bats to miss this year. I see him having trouble in this short part. If New York gets a hold of the ball, it tends to get into the gaps or over the fence.
MLB Prediction: New York Yankees -1.5 (-155)
