Pirates edged in opener
Pittsburgh came up just short in the series opener against Chicago on Friday, suffering a 4-3 loss to the Cubs. The Pirates are 44-46 on the season, 22-25 on the road and 53-34 with the over. Pittsburgh has Jordan Lyles getting the start today. He is 5-5 on the season with a 4.36 ERA.
The Pirates trailed 3-0 on Friday, but rallied for three runs in the eighth inning, only to see the Cubs score the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Pittsburgh got all three of its runs on a three-run home run from Starling Marte. Pittsburgh was held to just five hits as a team for the game. Chris Archer had a promising start, going six innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing three runs. Kyle Crick took the loss by allowing the run in the eighth. He is 3-5 on the year.
Cubs start second half with a win
After a rough finish to the first half of the season, the Cubs managed to open the second half with a 4-3 win over the Pirates. The Cubs are 48-43 on the season, 30-16 at home and 45-44 with the over. Chicago has Jon Lester on the mound today. He is 8-6 on the year with a 3.72 ERA.
Chicago got a great start from Yu Darvish on Friday, as he pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, but he didn’t factor in the decision. Randy Rosario got the win in relief while Craig Kimbrel earned his third save of the year. At the plate, it was Jason Heyward that drove in the winning run with a RBI single in the eighth. Kris Bryant had a solo home run in the win as well.

Still, he posts a 2.42 ERA at home over 48.1 innings and is facing a Pittsburgh team that struggled with Darvish on Friday. Lyles has lost four straight decisions and the Pirates have lost his last five starts. He gave up seven runs in four innings to the Cubs on the Fourth of July. It may not get much better today.
