Cano readies upset bid vs. Stanton
Five years ago, Robinson Cano and his father delivered some of the most touching moments in Home Run Derby history. It wasn’t all about the poignant stuff either, as the second baseman owned the night at Chase Field.
If the family covets a similar experience in San Diego, the perennial Silver Slugger must first topple arguably the strongest slugger in the modern game. Cano and the Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton square off in a highly intriguing first-round matchup at Petco Park. Online sports book Bovada.lv leans toward the white-hot Stanton, whereas Seattle’s offensive leader represents a +150 underdog.
While Cano boasts the championship pedigree in this case, Stanton rides an influx of momentum. After laboring through most of May and June, Miami’s right fielder has walloped five dingers in the past week alone. Wednesday’s bomb off Jacob deGrom traveled an estimated 470 feet, providing a taste of things to come shortly.

Unfortunately for Cano, he recently endured a 17-game homerless stretch. We’d enjoy seeing another heartwarming effort, but No. 22 faces a particularly cruel draw here. Side with sheer brute strength, not narrative, to seize the day.
