Rotoworld on Velazquez: Velazquez is expected to be called up to make a spot start on Thursday in Oakland. He’ll take the spot that was filled by Steven Wright (knee) and then Kyle Kendrick. It’s possible Velazquez will have to stick around longer if Drew Pomeranz’s triceps injury is worse than expected, but for now the Red Sox expect him to make his next start. Velazquez, 28, holds a 1.55 ERA and 20/5 K/BB ratio over 29 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket. He’ll be making his major league debut.
Gray limited the Rangers to two runs over six innings but didn’t factor in the decision Saturday. Gray allowed five hits and walked two, but the A’s bullpen wasn’t able to hold on to get the right-hander his first win of the year. Even so, it was the best turn of three so far for Gray, who is still rounding into form after missing the first month with a lat strain. Gray will keep searching for that initial victory of the season, but he’ll have to be on his game to get it Thursday when the Red Sox are in town.
Bet Tonight’s Red Sox vs. A’s Game
OUR PREDICTION: The Red Sox have won nine of their last 10 games versus the A’s overall and five of seven in Oakland. The A’s, meanwhile, are just 3-13 in Gray’s last 16 starts when he’s coming off four days of rest. They’re also 5-16 in Gray’s last 21 starts, are 0-5 in his last five outings after scoring two runs or less in their previous game, and are 1-5 in their last six games overall, regardless of who is pitching.
