Pirates Season Odds
The Pittsburgh Pirates are ready to put 2008 behind them and move on to 2009. The Bucs hope their young starting pitchers come through and carry this club this season.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have made the Pirates125/1 long shots to win the 2009 World Series and established their National League Pennant odds at 65/1.
The Pirates didn’t do much this offseason (not that they ever), but they did sign infielder Ramon Vazquez, who is coming off a stellar season with the Rangers. Outfielder Eric Hinskie was also added this offseason and could start in left field.
Pittsburgh is hoping that young arms Ian Snell, Zach Duke and Paul Maholm will carry this club, which doesn’t feature a very good offense. Young players like Freddy Sanchez, Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit comprise a nice core, but the rest of the surrounding cast is suspect.
Considering the Rays were 150/1 long shots to start the season last year, anything can happen. But the Pirates remain one of the biggest long shots in baseball this year and the front office doesn’t expect to make any moves around the trade deadline to help the club out. But who knows, maybe the Bucs will surprise.
