Royals Season Odds
If you’re looking for the 2008 version of the Tampa Bay Rays, you might find it in the 2009 Kansas City Royals, who could come out of the nowhere and make a run this season.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have made the Royals 70/1 long shots to win the 2009 World Series and established their American League Pennant odds at 40/1.
The Royals have a decent top of the rotation, with Gil Meche, Zach Grenike and an emerging young arm in Kyle Davies, who had a great spring. But Sidney Ponson and Brian Bannister have to produce at the back of the rotation if the Royals want to compete in the AL Central this year.
The lineup is pretty good, with offseason additions Coco Crisp and Mike Jacobs joining an offense that also includes Jose Guillen and breakout candidate Billy Butler, who is expected to spend a ton of time as the designated hitter this season.
The question becomes, does this club have enough to compete in a tough American League? Kansas City might have enough to sneak past the likes of the Twins, White Sox, Indians and Tigers in the AL Central, but do they have enough to compete with the big boys like the Red Sox, Rays, Angels and Yankees? Time will tell, but if you like a true underdog, it’s hard to dislike the Royals at 70/1 odds.
