Brewers to sign Segura to extension?
MILWAUKEE, WI (The Spread) – The Brewers might be on the verge of locking up one of their core pieces.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin indicated on Friday that he’ll soon meet with owner Mark Attanasio to discuss a potential contract extension with shortstop Jean Segura. The two sides will evaluate what they want to do regarding a multi-year contract offer and decide whether or not to open negotiations with Segura’s agents.
The 24-year-old isn’t eligible to hit free agency until after the 2018 season but after he hit .294 with 12 home runs and 44 stolen bases, the Brewers appear committed to Segura. Milwaukee is still trying to replace Prince Fielder after he jetted to Detroit in free agency a few years ago and with Ryan Braun’s history with controversy, the Brewers might be wise to lock up Segura now.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Brewers are 66/1 long shots to win the 2014 World Series and 28/1 to win the NL pennant this season. They’re also +1400 to win the NL Central Division, which are the longest odds outside of the Cubs at +2500.
The Cardinals are favored to win the NL Central at -175 while the Reds and Pirates both have the next-best odds at +375, respectively. The Dodgers are currently 7/1 favorites to win the 2014 World Series while the Cardinals are 15/2.
