Marlins 2020 Win Total Prediction
The Marlins have been in a deep rebuild over the past two seasons but a quartet of moves this offseason has brought at least some hope to Miami heading into spring training. Will the Marlins surpass their win total of 62.5 in 2020?
The Odds
According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com, the Marlins’ win total for the 2020 MLB season has been set at 62.5. The over has odds of 10/13 while the under is carrying even odds at 1/1.
Offseason Moves
The Marlins agreed to a two-year contract with Corey Dickerson, who is projected to be their starting left fielder this season. Dickerson played just 78 games last year for the Pirates and Phillies due to injuries but did slash .304/.341/.565 with 12 home runs and 59 RBI over 279 plate appearances. The team also signed fellow outfielder Matt Kemp to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training and are thought to be pursuing Yasiel Puig as well.
Miami also acquired Jonathan Villar from the Orioles this offseason. The former Brewer and Oriole will get looks at third base and in the outfield during spring training and adds more offense to the Marlins lineup. The same can be said for Jesus Aguilar, Villar’s former teammate in Milwaukee. Aguilar was claimed off waivers from the Rays.
Finally, veteran reliefer pitcher Brandon Kintzler was signed and is expected to be a key contributor in what will be a completely overhauled bullpen.
Marlins Win Total Prediction
Make no mistake, this team will not compete for a wild card berth in 2020 and will likely finish in the cellar of the National League East. That said, I do believe this club can get over that 62.5-win threshold. The influx of new faces listed above will add to a team that has developed a young core over the last two seasons. That group centers around third baseman/right fielder Brian Anderson, as well as starters Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith. Shortstop Miguel Rojas and catcher Jorge Alfaro round out the core and there are some top prospects that could provide a boost at various times this season. Again, this is not a contender. Not even close. But the Marlins don’t have to be in order for us to cash the over on their win total.
