Price, Tigers avoid arbitration
DETROIT, MI (The Spread) – The Tigers have avoided arbitration with one of their star pitchers, agreeing to terms on a one-year, $19.75 million contract with lefty David Price.
The $19.75 million contract is a one-year salary arbitration record. Price posted a 3.26 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 271/38 K-to-BB ratio over 248 1/3 innings between the Tigers and Rays last season. He’ll serve as the ace of a staff that also includes Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene.
The question now is whether or not Price will get traded before the season, although it looks like Detroit is content with hanging on to their No. 1 starter for the 2015 season. He’s recently emerged in trade talks involving the Cardinals and Marlins, but thus far those reports remain nothing but rumors.
The Tigers also have a decision to make about free agent Max Scherzer and whether or not they’ll throw enough money at him and agent Scott Boras to convince him to come back to Detroit. Scherzer rejected a massive contract extension worth an estimated $144 million back March of 2014.
