LAS VEGAS -- There’s a nice three-game series between Washington and Seattle starting Friday, but the center of attention in the baseball world over the weekend will be the pivotal four-game series that begins tonight in Anaheim as the Angels welcome the A’s.

This series has just about everything a baseball fan could ask for. You‘ve got the teams with the two best records in baseball battling for the AL West crown, with Oakland a game behind the Angels. The eventual winner is ensured a crack of advancing from the ALDS into the ALCS, while the loser is stuck in the wild-card game where anything can happen in a one-game format.

You’ve got superstars galore with likely AL MVP Mike Trout, who hit his career-high 30th home run last night against Minnesota, as well as Oakland’s deep starting rotation that features World Series hero Jon Lester, who is set to start on Friday.

So far this season, Oakland has taken eight of 12 games from the Angels, including two of three last week in Oakland. After this four-game set, these teams will meet one final time Sept. 22-24 in Oakland. Even with the Angels’ home-field edge, Oakland is a -125 favorite to win the series on the basis of the pitching matchups.

Here’s what each team will be coming with over the series:
Thursday: Sonny Gray (13-7) vs. C.J. Wilson (10-8)
Friday: Jon Lester (13-8) vs. Jered Weaver (14-7)
Saturday: Scott Kazmir (14-6) vs. undecided
Sunday: Jeff Samardizija (6-10) vs. Matt Shoemaker (13-4)

This has the look of ending in a draw, with Oakland winning Thursday and Saturday and the Angels winning Friday and Sunday.  The Angels probably wouldn’t complain about splitting this series.

It’s the A’s who need to build some confidence, and they’ve been doing just that of late. After a five-game losing streak, they have won five of their last eight games.

The Angels just keep rolling along and come in tonight on a run of winning 11 of their last 15.

Sonny Gray last pitched on Friday against the Angels and won, 5-3, after the A's had lost his previous four starts. He’s 2-0 against the Angels this season, and Oakland is 3-0 behind him in three all-time starts against the Angels. He comes in as a slight -102 underdog to C.J. Wilson.

Wilson is finally showing signs of getting back to his old self after missing most of July with a stint on the disabled list. In his first two outings back, he got roughed up for 10 combined runs – both losses – but in his last three starts, he’s given up only four runs over 18 1/3 innings. He last pitched on Saturday, giving up one run to the A's in a 2-1 loss.

We’ll side with Oakland and the UNDER tonight.

Thursday selections:

Oakland (Gray) -102 at Angels
A’s/Angels UNDER 7.5 (-105)
Royals (Guthrie) -145 vs. Twins
