Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, August 5

Your Tuesday freebie is the over in the Rays-Athletics game.

Have to think we will see some runs with Jason Hammel mound-bound for Oakland, as the transition to the American League has not gone smoothly for the former Cubs hurler.

Hammel is 0-4 with his new club in as many starts, and he has allowed a massive 18 runs in his 17 innings of work in an Oakland uniform.

Drew Smyly makes his debut for the Rays after getting traded from the Detroit Tigers. Smyly has made one start against Oakland this year, and he allowed 4 solo home runs, and 6 runs overall in just 5 innings of work in a game that ended 10-0 in favor of the A's.

Based on the starters lack of success lately, have to think we will add up to an Over in tonight's meeting.

I like the Chicago White Sox in this one, against the struggling Texas Rangers, who are still the worst team in baseball, record-wise.

The SMART INTANGIBLE with the White Sox - Colby Lewis. Texas' right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.44 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break.

The SMART INTANGIBLE working against the Rangers - A four-game losing streak should have all Texas fans' panic meter on high, cause their Rangers really are in jeopardy of losing 100 games.

In conclusion, why Chicago is my SMART PLAY in this game - This is altogether bad for the Rangers, as they can't seem to do anything right, and now have to continue this series on the road and against a feisty White Sox team on the south side of Chicago after the Pale Hose won the series opener.

Though Lewis is in after allowing two runs in seven innings in a 3-2 victory over the Yankees last Wednesday and though he is 5-3 in nine starts on the highway, he also has a 4.29 ERA on the road and that's too high when your team is playing as bad as the Rangers have been.

My free play is on the New York Yankees over the Detroit Tigers, as I think the oddsmakers are jumping the gun a bit in making David Price the favorite in this clash, as he makes his debut for the jungle stripes in a rumble in the Bronx

I know about his domination of the Yankees and his rivalry runs deep against them since he's played them plenty of times while with the Tampa Bay Rays, but that won't scare me against a streaking team that as won three straight and will be geared up for this series.

New York has a chance to get back into second place ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays, or gain ground on the Baltimore Orioles, as the O's are in Toronto this week. The race is heating up in the American League East with these three, and who knows what can happen with the teams underneath - Boston and Tampa Bay.

This is a huge statement game for the Yankees, who desperately need to get past this game before anything else, as a win over David Price would be large for the stripes. I'll take my chances with the home underdog here.

Tuesday's free play winner is the Mariners on the Run Line over the Braves.

Atlanta has gone in the tank on their current road trip, losing all 3 games to the Dodgers in L.A., then following that series up with 3 straight losses to the Padres in San Diego.

Now a rare stop in Seattle against a Mariners team that sends their ace to the hill, and I can totally see the Braves losing skid hitting 7 in a row in this spot tonight.

Hernandez has gone 14 starts in a row of at least 7 innings, and he has allowed 2 runs or fewer in all of those starts! His record in that span is 7-2 with a 1.44 ERA.

Hard to see the Braves slumping bats breaking through against King Felix tonight, that is for sure.

To be fair, Seattle's bats have been pretty quiet as well, but with Atlanta starter Alex Wood sporting a 3.56 ERA on the road this season, it's easy to envision a Seattle 3-1 win tonight at Safeco Field.

Play the Mariners on the Run Line on Tuesday.

ANDRE GOMES

Houston Astros -105

Probably, this might be the first time I’ll ride the Astros on the road being favored by the Sportsbooks, but we have some good factors working in their favor.

Dallas Keuchel made 3 decent starts since the All Star break has his 3.00 FIP + 3.33 xFIP can attest. He had some outstanding numbers vs. LH batters w/ .244 BA + .280 wOBA + 2.69 FIP + 2.47 xFIP and for tonight, PHI’s lineup is loaded w/ LH batters:

1. Ben Revere (L) CF
2. Jimmy Rollins (S) SS
3. Chase Utley (L) 2B
4. Ryan Howard (L) 1B
5. Marlon Byrd (R) RF
6. Carlos Ruiz (R) C
7. Darin Ruf (R) LF
8. Cody Asche (L) 3B
9. Kyle Kendrick (R) P

In my opinion, Keuchel has a good spot to perform quite well tonight.

On the other end, PHI’s SP Kendrick is coming from another subpar performance, this time against the offensively challenged NYM offense. He had the awful mark of 4.97 FIP + 5.32 xFIP in that game! HOU offense has been decent for quite some time. I have ranked them #10 in L30 days and therefore, I expect Kendrick’s struggles to carry on for this contest.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, August 5

BONES BEST BETS

TIGERS ML -120

Prize acquisition david Price takes the hill for the first time for the Tigers as he faces a familiar foe. Price has been a beast this season pitching at least seven innings in each of his last ten starts and eight innings or more in eight of the last ten starts. This group of Yankees do not have impressive numbers against the big lefty and should not put any blemishes on his season totals of a WHIP of 1.05 and ERA of 3.11. The Tigers also don’t kind playing on the road as they are a solid 31-21 this season. Hiroki Kuroda starts for the Yankees and is a solid pitcher but can be hittable at times and should not be able to hang with Price here tonight.

PADRES ML +116

The Padres have found a groove of late winning 5 of their past 6 games against two strong teams in St. Louis and Atlanta. Hahn for the Padres has been lights out this season with a 1.02 WHIP and a 2.01 ERA. Additionally Hahn has been incredible on the road with a 4-0 record a 0.92 WHIP and a 1.50 ERA. On the flip side Phil Hughes has not been good of late with a 1.50 WHIP and a 5.62 ERA. Hughes also owns a 5.51 ERA at home this season. Two teams with similar records, this game should be closer to a pick ‘em.

ROYALS ML -116

Kansas City is clearly a better team than the Diamondbacks, and they come in having won 4 of their past 5 games. On the hill for the Royals is Danny Duffy who has been incredible this year with a 1.12 WHIP and a 2.42 ERA – and over his past 3 starts just a 0.93 ERA. Duffy also owns better road stats with a 2.22 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP on the season. Miley meanwhile has decent stats on the season but has struggled at home with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in Arizona this season.

ANGELS @ DODGERS – UNDER 6.5 -130

Kershaw is Kershaw, don’t expect him to give up more than 2 runs. Meanwhile Santiago for the Angels has been great of late with a 0.86 WHIP and a 2.20 ERA over his past 3 starts. These teams come in hovering around the 7 run per game mark over their past 10 games. Put these two pitchers together and we see that number dropping.

BRAVES TEAM TOTAL UNDER 2.5 -135

Hernandez has gone 14 straight starts of 7+ innings of 2 or less runs. The Braves over their last 5 games are averaging just 1.80 runs for – match that up with Felix and we’re looking at maybe 1 run for the Braves.

RED SOX @ CARDINALS – OVER 7.5 -110

Both offenses are getting hot. The Red Sox have went over in 2 straight games and have scored 15 runs over the past 3 games. The Cards have went over in 4 of 5 and have scored 22 runs their last 4 games. De La Rosa has a 5.29 ERA and 1.82 WHIP his last 4 games and an ERA over 6.00 and WHIP over 1.60 on the road this year. Lynn has a low ERA this year, but his WHIP is high. He has a 1.31 WHIP on the year which isn’t great. The numbers show he should be giving up more runs and the Red Sox hot bats should take advantage of Lynn today.

Re: Free Picks: Service Plays for Tuesday, August 5

OC Dooley

Reds +105

One has to wonder why Cincinnati would be an underdog considering that tonight’s starter Johnny Cueto statistically has been among the National League best throughout the campaign.  The key to this pick surround Cincinnati MANAGER Bryan Price who following last night’s road loss actually CALLED OUT his team claiming that their collective effort and mental concentration were quote “unacceptable”.  According to their skipper the Reds were not ready to play last night as some baserunners forgot how many outs there were in an inning while the starting pitcher forgot to cover firstbase on an obvious defensive play.  One can assume that Price’s message has gotten through to the various Cincinnati personnel and the team came into this rivalry Interleague series with a large advantage.  While Cleveland has committed the most errors in all of baseball, Cincinnati has committed the fewest defensive errors in the entire National League.  Due to a trade deadline deal that saw former rotation ace Justin Masterson leave the team, the Indians have replaced him with tonight’s starter Josh Tomlin (lofty 6.45 ERA in the past four major league assignments). In his most recent mound appearance which was in the minors, Tomlin permitted multiple homeruns which to me is a “red flag”
